I grew up with my father always saying, “Never say never!” The lesson was always keep your options open, don’t rule anything out. Nonetheless, I thought I would never be a blogger. I can barely keep up with my email, where was I going to find the time to blog?? And yet I sit here, posting my initial blog entry….
I’ll tell you why, I’m sure you’re wondering. I am in the process of publishing my first book. The working title is Firewalk: Embracing Different Abilities. It’s a self-help book, with a slightly autobiographical perspective, about making the decision to embrace your disability (or major difference) into who you are and living life to the fullest. You’ll have to read the book to see how the firewalk comes into play (how about that for a promo?). The book has been a project of love I have been working on (and off) for the past 13 years! I felt called to record my triumphs and struggles to live the life I wanted, working through the challenges cerebral palsy poses from time to time to this. It is my hope that the book may impart some wisdom to others experiencing the same.
So why the blog? In the process of transitioning my career from full-time rehabilitation counselor to writer, public speaker and part-time counselor, I am learning that published writers now have to have a strong “online presence.” I am also hoping the blog will generate conversations about the themes in my book – integrating a disability into one’s self-concept, working through the fear of being judged, releasing myths about disability – to just name a few.
My hope is this will be a weekly blog. For those interested in reading, welcome and please comment if so inspired.
